Wife calls police; man arrested on child porn charges.

State police said they discovered 1,179 images of child pornography on the computer used by a former Lebanon man now charged with first-degree possession of child pornography.

Gary Melanson, 57, with a last known address of 12 Park Drive, Baltic, was arrested Wednesday by Colchester state police. Melanson first came to the attention of police in February 2007, when they received a complaint from his wife saying she had discovered pornography on a computer at a home they shared with four children.

Melanson's wife told police at the time their marital problems were brought on by "Gary's obsession with Internet pornography," according to the arrest warrant affidavit in the case. At one point, police said Melanson's wife checked the home computer's Internet history and found explicit photos, including girls between the ages of 2 and 11.

She left the house with the children after the discovery, police said.

The State Police Computer Crimes Unit seized the computer for forensic analysis. Police said they discovered sexual explicit images of children. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children indicated there were 129 images that appear to contain child victims who have been identified by law enforcement.

Melanson was arraigned Wednesday in Norwich Superior Court. His case was transferred to Part A court in New London where he is scheduled to appear Feb. 25. He remains held on $75,000 bond.
